Buying Beats? Bah! Why Apple Should Think Big and Buy Telsa (Forbes)

To borrow from Ted Levitt"s thesis on "marketing myopia," Apple is not in the digital "iDevice" business, and Tesla is not in the automobile business. They are both in the technology business; or better yet, in the technology disruption business – or, even better than that, one might say they are in the "Internet of things" business. Take your pick. But for sure, they are in the same visionary tech space. Once Tim Cook and Elon Musk realize this more expansive definition of the businesses they are in (and, I have to believe they have probably already figured this out), the scope of industries, products and services they can pursue for growth is almost limitless. And once the realization sets in, an "aha" moment should not be far behind. I"m talking about the uber "aha" as the most ingenious acquisition of this young century: Apple acquiring Tesla. It"s significant to point out that part of Mr. Cook"s vision for Apple is his publicly stated intent to break into other product categories. The strategic logic of such an acquisition and the resulting synergy for these two technology giants is, in my …

Marketing Communications

All strategies, tactics, and activities involved in getting the desired marketing messages to intended target markets, regardless of the media used.

Marketing communications (or marcom) consists of the messages and related media used to communicate with a market. Those who practice advertising, branding, direct marketing, graphic design, marketing, packaging, promotion, publicity, public relations, sales, and sales promotion are termed marketing communicators, marketing communications managers, or more briefly as marcom managers.

Traditionally, marketing communications practitioners focus on the creation and execution of printed marketing collateral; however, academic and professional research developed the practice to use strategic elements of branding and marketing in order to ensure consistency of message delivery throughout an organization. Many trends in business can be attributed to marketing communications; for example: the transition from customer service to customer relations, and the transition from human resources to human solutions. In branding, opportunities to contact stakeholders are called brand touchpoints (or points of contact.) Marketing communications is concerned with the general behavior of an organization and the perceptions of the organization that are promoted to stakeholders through these touchpoints.

Integrated Marketing Communications is accepted as a goal of a marketing communications strategy.

Definition of marketing?

The business definition of marketing.

Although the good Dr has offered great answers, I"d like to add that there is a simpler definition for marketing.

Marketing is communication. Period.

Every time a customer, client, potential client or potential customer is touched by your company or a representative of your company (paid or otherwise) marketing occurs.

If a satisfied customer tells a best friend how great your service is, you have excellent, effective "word-of-mouth" marketing. If someone complains to their buddy about your service, you ALSO have marketing. Although the negative marketing may be quite effective (by effectively driving away potential business) — it"s not good marketing for your business.

Marketing, (good and bad), is the way your company and its products or services are communicated/represented to the public — and specifically to your target market.

Marketing is NOT advertising. Advertising is just a small portion of the whole marketing concept. All communication about your company added together creates your overall marketing picture. If you have more negative than positive communications, your marketing doesn"t create sales and your business won"t survive.
